Eight hundred students of Mt St Mary’s College Namagunga in Mukono District have completed the National Patriotism Course, receiving training in patriotism, military drills, self-defence and techniques for responding to attacks.
Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Hellen Seku, a Commissioner at the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps, told the students that patriotism goes beyond physically defending the country.
She encouraged the graduates to use social media to promote Uganda, support local products and culture, fight corruption and contribute positively to their communities.
Seku also urged the students to prioritise their education and develop the confidence and skills needed to protect themselves from exploitation and inappropriate relationships.
The students demonstrated skills acquired during the course, including military drills and self-defence techniques.
Mary Kyomuhairwe, President of the Patriotism Club at Namagunga, said the programme broadened her understanding of patriotism, while fellow trainee Jovia Tumuhirwe urged young people to promote Ugandan products, music and drama.
The Head Teacher of Mt St Mary’s College Namagunga, Sister Regina Nabawanuka, said the programme had strengthened students’ sense of responsibility towards their country.
She urged the graduates to promote peace, discipline, responsible citizenship and national development in their future workplaces and communities.
Nabawanuka also dismissed claims that Namagunga is opposed to government education policies. She said such allegations were linked to disagreements involving attempts by some officials to influence school admissions through bribery.
The graduates pledged to promote patriotism and encourage fellow young people to love, serve and contribute to the development of Uganda.
