Former Ugandan Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi has taken on a new role in football after being appointed Patron of Kigezi HomeBoyz Football Club, with the club seeking to strengthen its position in Uganda’s top-flight football.
The appointment was announced by club chairman Davis Muhangi, who said Mbabazi had accepted the role at a crucial point in the club’s development.
Kigezi HomeBoyz is the only club from the Kigezi sub-region to have reached the Uganda Premier League in the past 25 years. Its promotion has increased the club’s profile while creating a platform for young footballers from the region to showcase and develop their talents.
Muhangi said the club views football as more than a competitive sport, describing it as an avenue for youth empowerment and career development.
“Beyond competition, the club has positioned itself as a vehicle for youth empowerment through sport, providing opportunities for talented young people from Kigezi and other parts of Uganda to develop their skills and pursue careers in football,” Muhangi said.
The club believes Mbabazi’s involvement will provide additional momentum to its efforts to promote football development and expand opportunities for young people across the Kigezi sub-region.
Kigezi HomeBoyz described the former premier’s acceptance of the Patron position as a significant milestone, saying it reflects the club’s growing importance within the region and Uganda’s wider football community.
The club now plans to build on its Premier League breakthrough by developing a sustainable football structure focused on nurturing young talent and creating a pathway for players from Kigezi and other parts of Uganda to pursue professional careers.
The leadership says the long-term goal is to establish Kigezi HomeBoyz as a strong and sustainable football institution while using the sport to contribute to youth development in the region.
